Tourniquets are a simple and effective lifesaving tool utilized to control mass hemorrhaging often seen in bombings, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle accidents, and accidents involving construction. All NYPD recruits currently receive training in tourniquets as part of the American Heart Association CPR Plus Certification (First Aid). Tourniquet training is also part of the recruit Active Shooter curriculum and the Specialized Training Section’s Swift Water Rescue Training. The Sof-T Tourniquet brand is recommended as it is highly durable, lightweight, easy to use, and can be applied smaller and tighter than other brands. They can be used on any size victim and can be self-applied. The Sof-T is recommended by the Committee on Tactical Combat Causality Care and is a trusted tool for emergency responders. It is currently being utilized by the U.S. Army and other elite military units.
