Description

Service(s): The Office of Student Pathways is requesting to enter into contract with the State University of New York (SUNY) to provide Student Pathways Initiatives. This partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) will allow students a head start on college and career pathways by providing early college credits for students citywide, increase capacity for work-based learning coordinators, teachers, and college and career advisors to implement career-connected learning and support data sharing protocols between the two agencies.

The Adams-Banks administration has put forward a bold vision to reimagine the educational experience for New York City Public School (NYCPS) students and activate their passion and purpose by connecting to the real world of careers. The goal is to put students on a path to a rewarding career, long-term economic security, and a choice-filled life. Grounded in career-connected learning, the Student Pathways Initiative, and its signature program FutureReadyNYC seeks to ensure NYCPS students graduate with real world skills, a strong plan, and a head start on college and careers. Career-connected learning is an educational model that brings together high schools, postsecondary institutions, and employers to combine classroom instruction with relevant, real-world experiences to prepare students to succeed in a rapidly changing economy.

NYCPS is developing a strategic partnership with SUNY to strengthen college and career pathways given 12% of NYCPS graduates enroll at a SUNY campus each year. NYCPS and SUNY have envisioned multiple initiatives to increase student awareness, access, transition, and completion of 2- and 4-year degrees aligned with in-demand career pathways. NYCPS is prioritizing partnership with institutions of higher education that enroll large numbers of graduates to strengthen advising and accelerated pathways to degrees for students, as well as educator credentialing opportunities in career-connected learning. NYCPS and City University of New York (CUNY) have a longstanding partnership aligned with these goals. As the institution enrolling NYCPS graduates at a rate second only to CUNY, SUNY is a critical partner to support the school system's vision to support students' pathways to long-term economic security.

NYCPS is partnering with SUNY Old Westbury, Oswego and New Paltz institutions with a goal to amplify a shared vision to drive transformative career-connected learning that blurs the lines between high school, college, and career. SUNY and NYCPS will continue to build partnerships with other SUNY institutions such as SUNY Farmingdale. The expanded partnership will increase equitable opportunities for NYCPS students to access career-connected dual-credit courses in high growth pathways while still in high school. These opportunities will allow 200 - 300 students to participate in dual credit course work that is rigorous, and career connected. Additionally, educators will gain upskilling opportunities to learn how to facilitate work-based learning and to strengthen college and career advising.

This partnership will support FutureReadyNYC, a Student Pathways Initiative that integrates the best of college and career preparation, to successfully launch students into strong careers in high-wage, high-demand sectors. NYCPS students will attend schools participating in the FutureReadyNYC program. Each school may have its own process for engaging and recruiting students. The FutureReadyNYC program has an overarching focus on equitable enrollment. The purpose of career-connected learning is that students graduate with academic excellence which is blended with real world skills and experience to have a head start on college and career, and a strong plan towards long-term economic security.
