Description

Scope of work under this emergency contract was the safe removal, repackaging, transport and disposal of Damaged, Defective or Recalled (“DDR”) Lithium-ion (“Li-ion”) type batteries from the Department of Sanitation facility located at 400 Bay 41st Street, Brooklyn, NY 11214 (hereafter, the “DSNY Facility”). The Department of Environmental Protection (“DEP”) is responsible for this procurement as the disposal of these expended Li-ion type batteries are classified as a hazardous material. The DDR Li-ion batteries are presently packed and stored in approximately 159 containers of various sizes, ranging from 5 gallon to 85 gallon capacity containers. At DSNY’s request, DEP is tasked to facilitate the immediate removal and disposal of the hazardous material from the DSNY Facility. The City of New York (“City”) has seen an increased number of incidents involving Li-ion batteries fires associated with e-bikes, e-scooters and other devices, resulting in many fires throughout the five boroughs. The DSNY Facility is not suitable for the storage of this hazardous material, and is currently at capacity; necessitating the City to immediately remove and disposal of the Li-ion batteries from the facility to mitigate potential hazards.
