Description

Since March 2016, Supervised Release has helped reduce the use of pretrial detention for individuals arrested and charged with crimes in New York City by providing services designed to ensure each participant’s return to court during the pendency of their criminal case. Specifically, Supervised Release employs evidence-informed practices in response to individuals’ identified needs in order to support and supervise them in their communities After assessing the potential needs of individual participants, Supervised Release focuses on engaging the individual both in the community and at Supervised Release providers’ borough offices to provide stabilizing supports to help ensure the individual returns to court. Supervision includes face-to-face and/or telephone contact, regular court reminders, voluntary referrals to community resources, and escorts to court appearances and other appointments when necessary. Originally designed as an alternative for adults charged with misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses, in early 2019, the program expanded to absorb and meet the needs of individuals between the ages of 16 and 19 years of age charged with specific violent felony offenses. The expansion facilitated the creation of a more robust supervision program, offering a broader range of monitoring and supports to a larger population.
